Indian rowers Khangembam Punil and Ashish Phugat won bronze medal for India at the ongoing Asian Rowing Junior Championships 2017 being held at in Singapore. The Indian duo won the medal in junior men’s double skull 200m event.

Rower Kh Punil who hails from Manipur is affiliated to Boys Sports Coy, Kirkee while Ashish Phugat is affiliated to Boys Sports Coy, Roorkee. The Indian team clocked 6:30:623min to bag the bronze medal. Iran secured gold medal clocking 6:30:174min and Japan won the silver medal reaching the destination in 6:30.207min.

Kh Punil who started his career as a rower of Moirang Boat House is from Kumbi Leishang Leikei. He is the son of Kh Kumar and Kh Purnimasi from Kumbi, Bishnupur District of Manipur.
In other events, India managed to bag several other medals. In Junior Men Coxless Fours, team of Lucky, Akshat, Nikhil Goliyan and D Sai Raju won silver medal. Indian women’s did not disappoint and won a bronze medal in junior women coxless Four. The medalist were – Sonali Swain, Jharna Hasti, Deepika Xess and Yamini Singh.

In Junior Men’s Pair event, Lucky and Akshat won silver medal. The team has qualified for Youth Olympic Games.
India sent a 17 member rowing team for the championships. The team consisted of 8 Men, 6 Women Rowers and 3 Coaches.
